Wellbeing at Myrniong Primary School

Drumbeat Wellbeing Program

Student Wellbeing is at the forefront of all that we do at Myrniong Primary School. Our aim is to provide a safe and engaging environment that supports and promotes behavioural, physical, emotional and cognitive wellbeing of all our students. We are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment in which children can learn and grow.

We understand that children learn at different rates and in different ways. As this makes teaching a complex process, our teachers plan and work collaboratively in teams to provide a comprehensive curriculum that is accessible by all students. Our focus is on value added learning for every child.

Academic excellence will always be our focus; however, we focus on the whole child. We want our learners to be equipped with self-confidence, resilience, self-belief and develop mindsets that help students define who they are. We believe that student wellbeing and learning are deeply interwoven and that student wellbeing is the responsibility of all members of our school community.

We know that physically and emotionally healthy students are happy, able to deal positively with life’s challenges, experience a sense of connectedness with the school and others, and are well placed to develop into well-balanced and successful young adults.

Support Services

Regional School Support Services are provided through the Department of Education and Training. These services include the provision of a psychologist, speech therapist, occupational therapist and specialised visiting teachers.

A positive and collaborative partnership between parents and the school is vital for students to achieve their best. Parents/carers with welfare concerns for their child should, in most instances’ contact the child’s classroom teacher. For more serious concerns, contact should be made with the Principal/Assistant Principal.

Disability Inclusion

The Principal class team works with teachers, students and families to identify the strengths, needs, and educational adjustments we can make at school to support the needs of our students. Adjustments can be made in the classroom, in the playground, to excursions and camps and the school facilities.

These adjustments not only benefit the student involved but the entire school.  Examples of adjustments may be, wobble stools, movement breaks, modifying the curriculum, timetable adjustments and adapting teaching styles.

  • SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR support

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a school wide framework for establishing the social, cultural and individualised supports needed for all students to achieve both social and academic success. It is a way to support everyone to create the kind of school where all students are successful and included. The SWPBS approach encourages effective learning, development of a positive, calm and welcoming atmosphere within the school.

SWPBS is preventative, and switches focus from negative behaviours to positive expectations and interactions. We aim to encourage, recognise and reward the positive behaviours displayed by students. At Myrniong Primary School, learning appropriate social skills and displaying positive behaviour is an important aspect of our role as a school. The SWPBS approach at Myrniong Primary School is underpinned by our school values- Respect, Integrity, Collaborations and High Expectations.

SWPBS is an evidence based framework which is used in schools worldwide. When implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Staff and students benefit from:

  • Increased respectful and positive behaviour
  • Increased time focused on instruction
  • Improved social and emotional wellbeing
  • Positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
  • A predictable learning environment

To ensure our students are aware of the expected behaviours that are encouraged within the school grounds, we have developed a Positive Behaviour Matrix. This matrix coincides with our school values and is there to support students in showing positive social skills. Class teachers explicitly teach the positive behaviour expectations just as we explicitly teach academics. Students who display the positive behaviours are acknowledged through the awarding of Dojos.
